Legacy Storytelling Video for Dow Jones News Fund
This legacy storytelling video project documents the reunion of the inaugural Dow Jones News Fund residency class and celebrates the long-term impact of a groundbreaking journalism diversity initiative.
Video and Journalism History
In 1979, a group of recently graduated journalism students participated in the first Dow Jones News Fund residency designed to help diversify American newsrooms. The program brought nine students from diverse minority backgrounds to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
During the residency, participants studied with leaders in the journalism industry before moving on to internships and ultimately building successful careers. Many went on to become editors, reporters, and leaders at major publications across the country.
A Reunion 44 Years Later
In 2023, the original group reunited in person for the first time in forty-four years. They were joined by another pioneering cohort: the Dow Jones News Fund’s inaugural audience engagement interns.
As a result, the event became more than a reunion. It reflected the lasting influence of mentorship, opportunity, and representation in journalism.
Legacy Storytelling Video Production
For this assignment, I produced, filmed, photographed, and edited a documentary piece about the organization and its alumni. The goal was to create a legacy storytelling video that captured both historical significance and genuine personal connection.
Rather than rely only on interviews, I focused on moments of interaction, reflection, and shared experience. In addition, the project combined video and photography to create a fuller narrative.
Ultimately, this project highlights how one program helped shape generations of journalists. More importantly, it honors the people behind that legacy while inspiring future participants.
