CURE Magazine
Editorial Portrait Photography for CURE Magazine
This editorial portrait photography project was created for CURE Magazine, a publication dedicated to cancer survivors and those affected by the disease. The assignment focused on telling a personal story through portraiture, highlighting both strength and vulnerability.
Art director Emily Hakkinen commissioned the shoot to feature Muay Thai athlete and cancer survivor Stacy Leung. From the beginning, the goal was to create a series of portraits that felt honest, powerful, and emotionally connected to her experience.

Editorial Portrait Photography Approach
The process began with collaboration between the art director and myself. In addition, a detailed mood board helped guide the visual direction and tone of the shoot.
At the same time, building trust with Stacy was essential. By talking through the process ahead of time, we created a comfortable environment that allowed for authentic expression during the session.
Portrait Photography in Challenging Environments
The shoot took place in a gym setting, which presented unique lighting challenges. However, by adapting to the available light and working efficiently, we were able to create dynamic and compelling imagery.
Because of a tight deadline, the shoot required focus and flexibility. As a result, both portrait and video elements were captured in a short timeframe without sacrificing quality.
Editorial Portrait Photography for Storytelling
The final images emphasize Stacy’s personal journey, including both the struggles and triumphs of her experience. In addition, they reflect the emotional connection between subject and story, which is central to editorial work.
Ultimately, this editorial portrait photography project contributed to CURE Magazine’s mission of sharing stories that inspire hope. The images were featured prominently in the publication and support its goal of connecting with patients, survivors, and their families.
