What the 2020 Election Looked like in Pennsylvania

In November 2020, Vanity Fair commissioned photographers across key battleground states to document Election Day. Assigned to Pennsylvania, I began before sunrise in Pittsburgh, photographing voters as polls opened and capturing the atmosphere of a historic election. After covering polling locations throughout the morning, I traveled across the state toward Philadelphia, stopping along the way to document scenes that reflected the political and social landscape of the day. By evening, I was photographing polling places across Philadelphia as voters cast their final ballots before the polls closed. VF requested first-person accounts about what we saw, heard, and sensed on Election Day, which you will see reflected in some of the following captions, and in the published piece.

Philadelphia

Veronica Branco and Remy Pellecchia leave the polls in Marconi Plaza in South Philadelphia PA, November 3, 2020.

Signs for Joe Biden and Donald Trump decorate the yard next to Marconia Plaza in South Philadelphia PA, November 3, 2020.
Theresa Misuraco, a poll worker, stands outside the polls at St. Maron Church in Philadelphia PA, November 3, 2020.
Chavela Settles, a poll worker, is emotional when listening to a performance by “Seraiah Nicole” at an election party outside the polls at John Barry Elementary school, where Smith James is working, in West Philadelphia PA, November 3, 2020.
Philadelphia, PA 2:23 p.m. Judge of election, Robert Hornsby, stands outside the polls at St. Maron Church in Philadelphia PA, November 3, 2020. I did not meet a judge of elections today who allowed me to photograph inside the polls. There are a lot of questions about whether or not photographers are legally allowed inside the polls in PA.
A Biden Harris sign hangs outside the polls at South Philadelphia High School in Philadelphia PA, November 3, 2020.
Asad McFadden stands outside the polls at John Barry Elementary school in West Philadelphia PA, November 3, 2020. McFadden was proudly wearing a Biden sticker.

Chambersburg

A truck supporting Donald Trump for President is on display at mile marker 183 on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Chambersburg, PA, November 3, 2020. I've spotted this sign a few times on my trips across state, and as the year progressed, it did not stand alone. Today, I pulled over in the middle of the turnpike to grab this shot. Socialism is a worry I hear people discuss often in rural Pennsylvania.

Pittsburgh

Voters lined up as early as 6:20 a.m. and polls opened about 20 minutes late due to some alleged machine trouble at PPG Paints Arena in the lower Hill District, Pittsburgh, PA, November 3, 2020.

Voters lined up as early as 6:20 a.m. and polls opened about 20 minutes late due to some alleged machine trouble at PPG Paints Arena in the lower Hill District, Pittsburgh, PA, November 3, 2020. The line grew quickly after I arrived at 6:45 a.m., but there was an air of determination and patience from voters in line.

The images were transmitted that night and published by Vanity Fair before Joe Biden was declared incumbent President, contributing to a nationwide visual record of one of the most consequential elections in recent U.S. history.
