Highlighting Research stories using pictures

This university editorial photography project involved creating a comprehensive image library for Drexel University’s School of Engineering. These image libraries are developed over multi-day shoots and provide institutions with a versatile collection of visuals for use across marketing, publications, and digital platforms.

For this project, I spent several days capturing high-level work happening across the school. The goal was to document not only the technology and innovation, but also the people behind it. These images were created for use in Dragon Discovery Magazine as well as the school’s broader marketing materials.

University Editorial Photography Approach

The concept was to build a rich visual catalog that represents the cutting-edge engineering work happening at Drexel. In addition, the imagery needed to feel authentic, human, and grounded in real academic environments.

Pre-production included approximately four hours of scheduling and coordination meetings. Because many of the subjects were students and professors deeply focused on their work, careful planning was essential.

Editorial Photography for University Marketing

Post-production lasted one week to meet the college’s print deadline. Ultimately, this university editorial photography project delivered a cohesive image library that supports both storytelling and institutional marketing.

The final images highlight innovation, collaboration, and the human side of engineering education.

Creating an Image Library for Higher Education

Balancing the need for strong visuals with tight academic schedules was one of the biggest challenges. However, by using a simple and efficient lighting setup, we were able to move quickly between locations.

In addition, pre-production materials and familiarity with the stories being published in the magazine helped guide each shoot. As a result, we completed production over three half days while maintaining a high level of quality.
